Finished wall-mounted ductless head on a painted brick wall.

A multi-zone mini-split connects several indoor heads to one outdoor unit. Each head has its own setting, so the bedroom can sit where you want it while the guest room stays off. There are no ducts to run, no attic crawl, and no chase cut through finished ceilings.

Most of the mini-split systems we install are multi-zone. Single-zone covers one space and starts at $5,500. Multi-zone is for the home that needs more than one room handled, and it is priced per indoor head, about $5,000 each.

Bigger homes use more than one outdoor unit. Our six-head job in Tucson used three. See that install.

Our process

How we design a multi-zone system

01

Manual J, room by room

We run a Manual J load calculation in ACCA Manual J software. You get a separate heating and cooling load for every room that gets a head.

02

Match heads to rooms

Each indoor head is sized to its measured room load. Then we pick the outdoor unit or units that carry those heads together.

03

Pre-measurement

We check wall access, electrical capacity and where every line set will run before install day, so there are no surprises on the wall.

04

Installation

We mount the heads and the outdoor unit, run the line sets in covers and route the condensate drains.

05

Quality-control visit

We record operating readings. A separate quality-control visit runs the full checklist, and the equipment warranties get registered.

06

Third-party verification

The completed installation is independently checked against the original quote and manufacturer specifications.

07

Backed in writing

Every mini-split install is backed by our written warranty. See the warranty details.

Proof: six heads, three outdoor units, one Tucson home

The homeowner wanted off gas and said the old central air never worked right. We removed the five-ton split system and installed three ductless heat pump systems with six wall-mounted indoor heads.

Our comfort advisor ran a room-by-room Manual J, and each head was matched to a measured room load. The page shows the room-load report, the planned line-set routes and the finished work. See the install.

Multi-zone mini-split FAQ

Straight answers, no runaround. If yours isn't here, call us.

Multi-zone is priced per indoor head, about $5,000 each. Two heads start around $10,000, three around $15,000 and four around $20,000. The written price is the price you pay. The one exception is something nobody could see before the work started, like a line set leaking inside a wall or under the slab, or wiring burned inside the attic. That is rare, and we show you before we touch it.

That depends on the outdoor unit and your room loads, and the Manual J settles it. A large home can need more than one outdoor unit. Our six-head Tucson install used three.

Single-zone is for one space and starts at $5,500. Multi-zone is for two or more rooms on separate settings. Most of our installs are multi-zone.

If your home has no ducts, or ductwork that fails its test, a multi-zone mini-split can be the whole system. We run the numbers on both and tell you straight. See our AC installation and duct testing pages.

Yes, if you qualify. We are a TEP participating contractor, so the rebate comes off your invoice. TEP's current mini-split rebate is up to $100 per ton. Qualifying is TEP's call and the amount can change, so confirm the current figure at tep.com.
